As of November 20, 2021, I have completed all the hikes in Stephen Hui's book. Of the 105 hikes, 57 were in the "103 Hikes in Southwestern BC" book written by Jack Bryceland & Mary + Dave Macaree which I completed in September 29, 2016. So I've done the remaining 48 day hikes in the last six years. I want to thank my husband, Case and my dear friend Wendy Gill for joining me on many of the hikes that were not local and often required overnight accomodation.
Comparing the two books, I found the "105" has more accessable roads to the trailheads than some of the hikes in the "103" for which I needed my trusty beat-up-4WD-FJ-with-a-lift. I also found that the "105" book caters to a wider range of abilities; rating from easy to more challenging hikes.
Thanks Stephen Hui for guiding me to new trails that I could explore and photograph.
I started blogging September 2019. Before that you can check out my albums of these hikes on our Chilliwack Outdoor Club Facebook page.
I have compiled a list of errors in Stephen Hui's book that I feel would be beneficial for you to know, sooner than later:
Hike #27 Tantalus View Lookout -- in the last section under Getting There it should read: "turn west into Brohm Lake parking lot" (not east).
Hike #32 Brew Lake -- 2nd paragraph: "turn left and then a quick right and head uphill in the trees" (so you have to turn left before you turn right on the trail). We ended up staying right where the FSR narrowed to two trails not far from the trailhead. Pink flagging tapes marked a way but the trail was very faint and we ended up wading through a large patch of nasty Devil's Club. We also talked to people working on the outhouse at Brew Hut. They said the Roe trail is much shorter and better than this one. The Varsity Outdoor Club maintains it.
Hike #33 Brandywine Mt -- last paragraph under Getting There: "In 900m turn left on Brandywine FSR " (not right). Past the garbage depot which you can see at that intersection.
Hike #38 Blackcomb Burn -- top of page says distance is 5.2 km. My GPS + the signs along the trail confirm that it's 6.88 km.
Hike #43 Mt> Currie -- bottom of first page: "After almost 4 hours of hiking, come to a lake and signed junction". There is no sign at the lake. You have to turn left at the lake and hike for about 10 minutes before you come to the sign.
Hike #53 Coquitlam Lake -- middle of second page: "Farther south take the left fork for the Woodland Walks Lower Loop" (not Upper Loop).
Hike #98 Mt. Erie -- Third paragraph on first page: "Stay right at two junctions, then go left on trail 227 then right on trail 226 (a very short connector trail) and then left on trail 238 (not right) to reach the viewpoint"
Hike #99 Hoypus Hill -- top of second page: "and right on Alder trail which leads to the Fireside trail". Go right on Fireside trail. It's a T-junction so I was confused as to which way to turn.
