June 12, 2024 -- Ross Lake National Recreational Area in Hope & Fraser Canyon region.
Stats: 17.4 km / 524m gain / 919m high point / 4:10 hours MT
An emerald green lake at the base of the jagged Hozameen peaks made for a gorgeous view of a mountain that we usually see from the opposite side in Manning Park. For all of us, it was our first time on the trail.
The Silver Skagit Road was finally fixed this spring, after being badly damaged by the atmospheric rivers in 2021. Other than potholes, it was in good shape -- all 60 km of it. The extensive repairs they did were impressive. We parked at the Canadian/US border by a rusty locked gate. After walking 2.5 km on an FSR east of Ross Lake, we arrived at the trailhead.
We'd passed many picnic tables and a few shelters and campsites on the FSR. But they looked forlorn, in need of repair and overgrown. In contrast, this historic cabin at the trailhead looked well-maintained.
The trail was in good condition, free of dead-fall.
