This challenging hike was more so, because of the post-holing on the ridge. But the majestic views made it well worth the effort.
The steep Elk Mt. trail is very familiar to us.

Just below this first viewpoint we pulled on our micro-spikes.

Sumas Prairie with Cultus Lake and Chilliwack River Valley to the left -- southwest to northwest.

Our first views to the southeast.

Chilliwack River & Cultus Lake and the ocean on the horizon.

On Elk's summit.

It takes about an hour to hike from the summit of Elk to the sub-peak of Thurston.

We soon encountered snow and regretted that we didn't take snowshoes. About a quarter of our steps were sinkers. Post-holing can sap one's energy quickly.
A bear footprint. Whiskey Jack

Arrived! The Cheam Range.
Rexford & Sleese Peaks, the Border Peaks, Tomyhoi, McGuire + Mt. Baker -- east to south.

The rock cairn is located here and not at the actual peak because the view is not obstructed by evergreens.

Golden Ears, Robbie Reid and Judge Howay could be seen to the northwest.

Group shot: Sue A, Denise D, Brigitte G + me.

Harley was a very tired dog afterwards.

Heading back; Elk Mt. to the right.

Leaving Elk Mt. summit.

The piece just below the viewpoint was the trickiest, being very steep and icy. Micro-spikes were a must.
On the drive home through the Ryder Lake area, we saw this Piebald fawn and two adult deer.
